I did enjoy how the plot developed through the second half since it seemed to me like we finally! got to where we were supposed to be regarding the main conflict. There was a tone shift as well to something a little more urgent and somber, but that was understandable considering the context of the plot. That made it so I had trouble connecting to the POV characters, Zafira and Nasir, and caring about what was happening with them. I felt like nothing was happening throughout the first half. The writing was still fantastic and I did love the complex world-building and how magic was explored here, but I just found the story so slow. I don’t know… there was just something about We Free the Stars that didn’t quite capture my attention like the previous book did. “We free the stars, shatter the darkness holding us captive, and return the world to the splendor it once was.” In spite of the darkness enclosing ever faster, Nasir and Zafira find themselves falling into a love they can’t stand to lose…but time is running out to achieve their ends, and if order is to be restored, drastic sacrifices will have to be made. Zafira battles a very different darkness festering in her through her bond with the Jawarat-a darkness that hums with voices, pushing her to the brink of her sanity and to the edge of a chaos she dare not unleash.
